Your Life Could Depend on It

I'm in nursing school right now, which really doesn't make much sense to me. I'm competent and I'm making good grades, but all around me are people who make me think, "if I needed a nurse, would I want it to be one of these people?" The answer is a definite no. There's the political impresario who has weaseled her way into the position of class president. I have spent countless times trying to mentally picture her inserting a catheter and all I get is the image of her leading a revelutoinary coup. Next, we have the aspiring "street pharmacist". I really hope that I don't have to say more. When confronted by the knowledge that we had a cheater in our midst, he commented, " I wouldn't trust a nurse if they had to cheat their way through nursing school" How much more so a person who steals my prescribed pain meds for their street value? What do I know? I'm a dirty hippy who doesn't believe in exercise. I'm in it for the big bucks. How's that for quality of care? Maybe you could ask the chick sitting next to me; if she wasn't so busy writing song lyrics and planning how fast she's going to make her first million.

Yikes! You should be a nurse if you think you can help people and if you care about people. I have only been in the hospital a couple of times but nurses can make the difference between it being a hellish experience or not. When I had my first son, the labor and delivery nurses were fantastic. So caring, gentle, and made me feel like a real person having a really important experience. The recovery nurses were awful! It was the middle of the night, I had a physically traumatic delivery and they were rude, rough and uncaring. If I hadn't had my husband there, it would have been emotionally crushing and downright dangerous (they put me in the bathroom, left, and I passed out).

I hope I don't run into any of your classmates!
